Description
Inspired by the blue and gold enamel of the High Altar at Westminster Abbey, and the mosaic stars in the centre, this decoration would look beautiful in any home.
The present altar and screen was erected between 1867 and 1873 after George Gilbert Scott’s design. The sculpted figures on the screen (Moses, St Peter, St Paul and King David) are by H.H. Armistead. Behind the altar is a mosaic of the Last Supper designed by J.R. Clayton and carried out by Antonio Salviati. The inscription along the top of the screen reads "The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord and of his Christ" (from the book of Revelation).
St. Nicolas specialises in bespoke Christmas decorations and fabric gifts. All the decorations are handmade, and the time taken to make each one is reflected in their unique quality.
Their Indian Christmas decorations are made using the traditional method of zardozi embroidery. Zari (meaning gold) embroidery originated in Persia and reached India in the 12th century. It is a highly skilled embroidery technique that traditionally used gold wires and jewels to embellish courtly robes. Zardozi work is a rare and respected craft, the skills of which are handed down from generation to generation.
