Description

Hanging Fabric Decoration of Florence Nightingale with her lantern at the ready, prepared to help. Florence was born on 12th May 1820 in Florence, Italy, while her parents William and Frances were on tour. She started her career helping out in London hospitals and at the outbreak of the Crimean War in 1854 travelled with others to Scutari to nurse the wounded. The Times newspaper called her "The Lady of the Lamp" referring to her midnight vigils on the wards. Once back in England she set about reforming the army nursing services.

The Dean of Westminster re-dedicated the Nurses' Memorial Chapel in the Abbey, in the upper Islip chantry chapel, to Florence Nightingale, on the centenary of her death.

The deocration is made by St. Nicolas, they specialise in bespoke Christmas decorations and fabric gifts. All the decorations are handmade, and the time taken to make each one is reflected in their unique quality. For 25 years they have worked with a small Christian charity in Thailand that helps disadvantaged rural women find work in their community, rather than being forced to leave home to work in a factory.
