Description
The coronation of a new sovereign in England is staged in Westminster Abbey, where every King and Queen of England, with the exception of Edward V and Edward VIII, has been crowned since King Harold II in 1066. The oldest objects used in the coronation ceremony are the ampulla and the anointing spoon.
The spoon dates back to the 12th Century. At the anointing ceremony, holy oil is poured from the ampulla into the spoon. The officiating Bishop or Archbishop then applies this to the new Sovereign's head, breast and palms.
