Sense of Taste Tapestry
-
Lady & The Unicorn - Le Gout (Sense of Taste) An Intricate Jacquard woven tapestry. Embellished with a Medieval style acanthus leaf border & loops. The original hangings are the most celebrated set that have survived from the medieval period. They consist of six, now in the Cluny Museum Paris. Depicting the five human senses & the sixth called "To my only desire". Designed in Paris & woven in Brussels around 1470
by Willem de Pannemaker for Jean Le Viste (arms shown on the standards), whose family originated from Lyon & served Charles VIII. "The Taste" Here the elegant Lady's gesture choosing a delicacy from a candy box can be seen. In the loosely strewn flowers all kinds of animals disport themselves. Even the smallest details are reproduced with great care. Note also the monkey savouring a morsel.
Tapestry composition 80% cotton 20% viscose woven on a Jacquard loom by Master weavers.
