Gold, silver, copper, gilded metals, ivory, pearls and jet, together with precious and semi-precious stones, were used to make jewellery during the 16th century. Pearls were one of the most popular items of jewellery in the Tudor era and were worn by Anne Boleyn and her daughter Queen Elizabeth I. Pearls were worn in a string, as a single pearl or a combination of both. Queen Elizabeth I had single pearls sewn into her dresses.
