Recommended Summer Reading
With the UK summer school holidays arriving soon, we know that many of you will be planning your next trip away, whether that is halfway around the world or just across the country. As such we have put together our recommendations for some holiday reads to enjoy by the pool including fiction, non-fiction and children’s titles.
If you enjoy reading about the lives of the young, rich and beautiful then you are sure to enjoy The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. Wilde takes you through the hedonistic heights of Victorian high society using his characteristic wit, whilst also exposing the high cost paid for these lives of sin and debauchery. This thrilling tale will keep you enthralled and it is only 288 pages so it won’t be too heavy to pack in your suitcase.
If you have a love of historical fiction then you will know of the wonderful Philippa Gregory, an author who brings to life the intricacies of court life in Plantagenet and Tudor England. One of her latest novels is Three Sisters, Three Queens which follows the intertwined lives of Katherine of Aragon and Henry VIII’s sisters Mary and Margaret. Filled with excitement and intrigue the novel brings to life these historical figures, providing motives for the actions which have become part of history.
If you relish hearing about the intrigue of the Tudor court but prefer your books to be non-fiction, you can’t go wrong with The Tudors by Peter Ackroyd. This is the second book in Ackroyd’s History of England series which began with the all-encompassing Foundation volume taking you from Neolithic times to the beginning of the Tudor dynasty. Although this book is non-fiction you will feel like you are reading a fantastic piece of storytelling thanks to the sometimes shocking exploits of the Tudor monarchs combined with Ackroyd’s vivid prose.
When travelling with children it can be hard to keep them amused for long car or plane journeys so we recommend bringing along a selection of activity based books to keep them entertained. Colouring books have become exceedingly popular with children and adults alike in recent years and can inspire their creativity. If you are short of a surface to lean on for colouring then sticker books can provide an excellent alternative that they can rest on their lap.
