CD of the Month: For Queen and Country
To coincide with the Queen’s official birthday this weekend, we have chosen For Queen and Country as our CD of the month. This wonderful two disc edition contains a collection of music put together to celebrate the 90th birthday of Her Majesty the Queen. It includes performances from Russell Watson, Richard and Adam, Jonathan Antoine, Charlotte Jaconelli, The Band of the Royal Marines, The Choir of Trinity College Cambridge and many more. It is the perfect CD if you are planning to hold a party to celebrate with the Queen this summer, or just to celebrate this great nation.
Five of the pieces included on this CD were also chosen for the wonderful collection of music that was performed at the Queen’s Coronation at Westminster Abbey. These are ‘Greensleeves’, ‘Nimrod’, ‘Pomp and Circumstance No.1’, ‘Pomp and Circumstance No.4’ and of course ‘God Save the Queen’. The music at the Coronation was selected by an advisory committee of Dr William McKie, Organist and Master of the Choristers at Westminster Abbey, Sir Arnold Bax, The Master of the Queen’s Music and Sir Ernest Bullock, Director of Music at the Coronation of George VI.
‘Pomp and Circumstance No.1’ was not originally intended to be part of the service as Sir Arnold Bax had composed his own piece, ‘Coronation March’ to be played following the national anthem. However during the final rehearsal the Earl Marshal, who was in charge of all non-liturgical arrangements for the service, felt that Bax’s piece was too thin and that it should be replaced. Despite not being the first choice for the day, it is hard to imagine now anything more appropriate than this glorious piece of music. As these pieces of music were part of such a momentous occasion in the Queen’s life it is fitting that they have been included in this collection.
The other tracks selected for the CD are truly patriotic; from a stirring rendition of ‘Rule Britannia’ to the beautiful ‘Jerusalem’ it is hard not to listen and be uplifted by the rousing music. For more information about our CD of the month and to purchase it, please click here.
