This wall plaque has been inspired by 19th century European designs. The skills in making samplers not only taught sewing but alphabets, numerals and religious text. A few interesting samplers recorded historic events: William of Orange's arrival in England, his defeat of the French in 1692, & an earthquake in the same year. The traditions of sampler making was naturally taken to North America, but 18th Century examples made in that country, of which a large number have been preserved, were significantly independent in style.
